(PRP)
During this procedure, a small amount of your own blood is drawn and processed in a special centrifuge which separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth factors from the blood. The high concentration of platelets and growth factors is then injected into the damaged tissue or joint.
In this procedure, the concentration of platelets and growth factors increases up to 500%, therefore when the PRP is injected into the site, an optimal healing environment is created. The healing response of PRP injections works over a long period so it may be 6-8 weeks before you feel the total effects of the injection.
Depending on the area injected and the severity and chronicity of the problem, one or two subsequent injections may be necessary. A good program of physical rehabilitation is required to fully rehabilitate the body back to full functional capacity.
Cortisone injections are used to treat knee osteoarthritis, greater trochanteric bursitis, epicondylitis and rotator cuff tendonitis. It is also used to treat non-operative TFCC tears, CMC OA, carpal tunnel and many other inflammatory conditions.
Injections are usually done three months apart, to a maximum of four injections per year. Our Sports Medicine Physician uses Kenalog as it has the lowest rate of post-injection pain. Cortisone is covered through the Ontario Drug Benefit Program.
